Hot Autumn Nights Blog Hop

Welcome To The Hot Autumn Nights Blog Hop

I’m an October baby, so I love autumn. It’s my favorite time of year. The heat of summer is over, but winter’s bitter cold hasn’t set in yet. My ideal hot autumn night would be lying on a blanket in my backyard, with a bottle of wine, a tray of chocolate strawberries, and a sexy man next to me.

Now for a hot excerpt of my debut novel, Eternity.

Rocking, no longer the purr of a car, but a steady, slightly nauseating rocking motion woke her. The chug and rumble, and a glimpse of water out of the car window confirmed her location. She was on a boat. A few feet away, Roman stood at the rail.

Stella opened the door and stepped into a fine mist and a slick metal deck. The strong smell of diesel filled the air. She’d traveled on the Staten Island Ferry for a job interview once. Too afraid to go up on the open deck, fear of drowning kept her in the middle of the ferry, seated near the snack bar. This rusted wreck couldn’t compare. No deck chairs, no snack bars, and no lower levels. The water lapping against the boat seemed dangerously close.

She looked around, searching for other travelers. There were none. Roman and she were the only people. She glanced up and spotted a shadow in the weather worn wheelhouse. The captain, hopefully. The boat rode a crest and groaned when it slammed back into the water. Stella clutched the car to steady herself. Level again, she carefully walked around to the front of the car.

“Where are we?” Afraid to cross the distance, Stella perched on the hood. Roman faced her. His shades were gone. In the weak light his eyes were deep, dark drowning pools.

“No one sits on the hood of a Shelby.

“Why?” was the only thing she could think of to say.

“Because, it’s a Shelby.”

As if that answered the question. Cautiously, she came to the rail and stared out into the dark night for any landmarks. Light twinkled in the distance, but didn’t cast enough illumination to pick out any details. “Where are you taking me?”

“Somewhere safe.”

“Does that place exist?” Her lips twisted in a wry smile.

“It’s my job to make sure it does, at least for you.”

“Is that the only reason why you’re here, because it’s your job?” She shouldn’t have asked, but the words slipped out without a care for her pride.

“Why else would I be here? I’m a mercenary. I have a job to complete.” Monotone, his voice held no life, no passion.

Something in her heart broke. “Just a job?” Watery, her voice wavered.

“Just a job.” He turned his back on her.

Streaks of sunlight stabbed the sky. If she cared to see, the perfect sunrise greeted the day. She couldn’t enjoy it, not when a continent separated her and the man standing inches away. And rightly so. Too much shit had passed between them for anything meaningful to survive. Its best she let go of what she thought they had. It’s not like she didn’t have other things to worry about.

Like the serial killer chasing them.

“Did you know?” Her heart already knew the answer, but her head needed more confirmation.

“No.”

“Not a clue?’ she pressed.

His eyes snapped to hers. Pain did laps in their depths. They said what his lips refused to impart.

She touched his stubbled cheek. “I’m sorry, Roman.”

He jerked away. “Don’t pity me.”

She couldn’t deny it. Pity is exactly what she felt seeing his pain.

“Landing in ten.” The captain cupped his mouth and yelled from the wheelhouse.

Roman gave him a single wave.

“Landing where?” she asked.

“A small town upstate.” He walked over and stopped in front of her. “Fifty miles from here is a cabin on a lake. That’s where we’re going.”

“Why there?” She wanted to keep him talking.

“It’s a good place to hold up and rest.”

A simple touch stopped him before he went to the car. “I’m sorry you were betrayed.”

Though he turned away, his shoulders rose as he took a great shuddering breath. This time when she pulled him, he moved into her arms and she couldn’t help burying her face in his neck. She pushed all her questions and valid reasons aside. Q&A would come later. Right now, their joined pain needed easing.

God, his scent shot through her blood stream like nicotine to a three pack-a-day smoker who had quit puffing a week ago.

Roman bent her body to his and molded every inch to his strength. Pressed against the entire length of him, his heart thudded, echoing her loneliness and his anguish. In this moment, they were one.

She didn’t want his arms around her. Naked, that’s what she desire most, to peel his shirt off and touch his perfect body. Briefly, his arms tightened as she pushed away, but he released her and stepped away. She grabbed his belt. His silly expression made her giggle as her nervous fingers fumbled with his buckle, belt, button and zipper. Laughter came to a choked halt when her hands dipped in the waistband of his briefs and she sprang his erection free. Tip glistening, her thumb ran over the wet opening and delighted in the passionate gasp her single finger evoked from him.

She fisted her hand around him and rolled her palm over the sensitive tip. His hips jerked when she gave a gentle squeeze and stroked downward. From the roll of his eyes and rhythmically pulsing of his hips, she commanded his passion.

As he commanded hers. The heat between her legs gathered. She stroked, up, around, down, and watched his face contort into painful pleasure, then pulled her hand away. He nearly snatched her hand back, but Stella met his lust-crazed eyes with her tongue licking her lips.

Slowly, she circled his tense body. The first time or the hundredth, the sight of him made her breathless. She stepped in front of him and unbuttoned her pants.

“We can’t do this.” His hand stopped the descent of her zipper.

Please teetered on the tip of her tongue.

He drew in a harsh breath. “I’m your bodyguard. Nothing more.” Still hard, he stuffed himself back into his pants and walked away.

Black Friday Hop

I AM NOT DOING BLACK FRIDAY.

This year I’m sitting at home, writing, reading, and talking you guys and sharing an excerpt Everlasting, the sequel to Eternity.

Firm lips kissed the delicate spot above her collarbone as if he knew that would drive her crazy.  She grabbed onto his broad shoulders. His long, midnight hair brushed her finger. She threaded her fingers through the silky strands and arched, bringing her nipples into contact with his hard pecs. Need shot through her. She wanted more.

His lips stroked up the column of her neck. She turned her head, giving him complete access to the sensitive skin. He chuckled, a deep, sensual sound that reverberated through her and made her want to hear him laugh.

A velvety touch circled the shell of her ear. She giggled and twisted her head to get away, bringing their lips within centimeters of contact. Would he finally kiss her? Through the fall of his hair, she glimpsed his eyes. Deep ocean blue.

His hands tightened on her bare hips. Her legs parted and slid up his muscular thighs. She was more than ready for him.

He said her name. Whispered it. “Alexis, wake up.”

Detective Alexis Lever’s shot straight up in her bed. Her breath hitched and her heart clenched tight.

Wow.

She’d dreamed of him before, but never so vivid. She adjusted her twisted flannel P.J.’s and wiped the sweat from her brow.

A breeze fluttered the curtains and stirred the surprisingly thick October air. A putrid odor flooded the small the bedroom.  Gagging, Alexis pressed a fist to her lips as her heart kicked into a gallop. Her gaze darted around the moonlight dappled bedroom of her grandmother’s house.

No one lurked.

The raised hairs on the back of her neck didn’t buy it. She reached for her gun, slid the covers off, and slipped from the bed.

I hope that whetted your appetite for more! Stay tuned.

Autumn Harvest Blog Hop

NaNoWriMo-Oh No!

It’s November, autumn leaves are falling, and that means it’s. NaNoWriMo. Every writer knows what that means: 50k in 30 days.

That means, no TV, no movies, no friends, no weekends, no nights out, and limited social media. Plan quick, easy to prepare meals, activities to keep the kids and spouses—if not happy—certainly occupied. We are supposed to take these drastic measures in the hope that 1,333 words will magically pour out of our heads, race down our arm to nimble fingers poised over keyboards and laptops.

Well this writer isn’t doing it. Not this year, not next year, not ever.

My muse is a finicky bitch. She works when she wants too, where she wants too, and is easily distracted. I’m one of those writers that edits while they write. I’ve heard that’s a no-no.

‘You should write the entire manuscript and then edit’.

That sounds good and makes sense, but doesn’t works for me. Usually, I write one-third the novel then go back over the plot, the characters, and setting. I ask myself questions: Does my plot make sense? Are my characters interesting and believable? Is there enough action? Where do I go from here? And most important, do I still love this idea and can I finish this novel? If I’m dumping words on a page just for the sake of completing a word count goal, I can’t do that. It doesn’t feel right, especially at the end of thirty days when I have to edit everything and I have no idea why I’ve  written something or where the story is going. I don’t want to be in that position.

For me, NaNoWriMo is an everyday occurrence. I average between five hundred and one thousand words per day. My novels average 100k, so I complete a manuscript approximately in four months. Right now, with all the other events occurring in my life, my slower, steadier pace is just right. Those writers who can write a great novel in thirty days awe me. They have my deepest respect. My pen salutes you.

Thanks for Stopping by. Leave a comment to win a great prize.

Now what are those prizes?

1st Grand Prize: A Kindle Fire or Nook Tablet

2nd Grand Prize: A $50 Amazon or B&N Gift Card

3rd Grand Prize: A Swag Pack that contains 10+ paperbacks, ebooks, 50+ bookmarks, cover flats, magnets, pens, coffee cozies, and more!

Stella’s eyes betrayed her. No matter how much she ordered them not to look at Roman, they continued to willfully stray. Damp hair curled around his ears and dangled into his eyes. A two-day shadow covered his cheeks and jaw, like stubbly grass on a recently plowed field.

Her fingers ached to thread his hair and pull him closer just as her palms itched for the abrasive feel of his growing beard. Too busy devouring two porterhouse steaks, a heaping pile of potatoes, and corn, he didn’t see her longing. When he drained his beer, she got up and brought him another one. Raised eyebrows questioned her, she glanced away.

“Thank you for dinner and the beer.”

Cheeks hot, she started cleaning the kitchen and made room when he joined her. They worked well together. Within minutes the kitchen was clean and orderly. Roman grabbed another beer and went to the porch. She hesitated, but gave in to the need to be near him. Leaning against a pole, he stared at the quarter moon hanging over the lake.

“Do you come up here often?” she asked studying his profile.

“No . . . I need too, though. Solitude gives me clarity.”

“So, you like being alone. I must have turned your safe, predictable life upside down.” Her voice broke with a shaky laugh. “Sorry for intruding. As soon as this is over, I’ll be out of your way.”

The half empty beer in his hand shattered. Before she could react, he picked up the large pieces, kicked the rest off the porch and stalked back into the house.

She followed, but he wouldn’t look at her while he checked the windows and locked the door. When he walked up the stairs to the bedroom and that decadence bed, he didn’t look back.

Six Sentence Sunday November 4, 2012

This is a snippet from my WIP, Everlasting. I hope you enjoy.

Once more, Detective Alexis shifted her butt, this time a little to the right. Blood returned to the numb area with a stabbing awareness which would’ve made her wince if it wasn’t for the two detectives sitting across the table staring at her. Standing and stretching was out of the question. The two would see it as a weakness they could exploit. They’d offer her something to eat, drink, another bathroom break, anything to get her to talk.

She almost laughed at their frustration, then she’d look down at the new jewelry linking her wrists together and her orange jumpsuit, and realized she had nothing to laugh about.

Sweet Saturday Sample November 3, 2012

This is a snippet from Eternity.

A little set up: Stella has just awaken in the hospital after accusing Roman of being the man who attacked her.

The fog slowly lifted from Stella’s eyes. She groaned and placed a hand to her forehead. Someone must have filled her head with cement and towed it under water before placing it haphazardly back on her neck. It seemed a decade passed between the time her lids opened and she shifted into a more comfortable position. Groggy, throat drier than a three day old bread, she reached for the sweating water pitcher on her bedside table. Cautiously, she leaned forward and guided the container to her mouth. A slick slice of heaven, she drank until the dryness abated and her belly sloshed.

Her body froze. He was here, sitting in a chair near the foot of her bed. The pitcher slipped. She caught the handle before the water drowned her. Heart beating a rapid dance, she searched the sheets to find the call button.

So still. Is he asleep? It didn’t matter. He had to go.

God in heaven let him stay asleep. He could wake when the police arrested him. Frantic, she riffled through the beddings.

Did he move? She stopped searching to stare at him again. An uneasy breath released while her eyes roamed his smooth prominent forehead, bold black eyebrows, and high, sharp cheekbones balanced by a well-defined, squared chin. A long, slightly crooked nose perched above a mouth that could caress the perfect kiss from a woman.

I’m thinking about kisses when he’s going to kill me. She gave herself a mental slap and studied the man again.

Hmm, something was off. While his body might at first glance appear relaxed, his shoulders were too erect, his legs were braced an equal distance apart, and his chest—he wasn’t breathing.

And the call button was gone.

I’m going to die in this room. Fright sapped her energy and she flopped back onto the pillows.

Fight, girl. You’ve been through too much to give up now. She turned her head a fraction and watched him. Still, he hadn’t moved, but she wasn’t fooled. A scream wouldn’t get far with her sore throat. He occupied the only chair. A night table, TV, and monitors encompassed the rest of the room’s items. Shit, there had to be something in the room she could use to defend herself.

A phone lay on the rolling over-the-bed cart. Unfortunately, three IV stands and a machine separated her from survival. She’d have to get out of bed to reach it. There was no way she had time to make a call or reach her door before he stopped her, but she could slam the phone against the side of his head. With any luck, she’d knock him unconscious and escape. She measured the distance to the door.

Who was she kidding? She’d need God and all his angels to get out of this, maybe. Still, she shifted her body away from him and closer to the edge of the bed.

Lord, if you’re listening …

Concentrating on her makeshift weapon, she scooted lower. Thankfully, someone had left the bed rails on the bottom of the bed down. She flipped the covers back and dragged her legs over the side. The cold floor sent needles of pain through her feet and up her calves. They trembled as she carefully stood and tried to force them to work. Instead of standing, she began to slide down. As the beige linoleum rushed to meet her, she swallowed a cry.

Arms wrapped around her back and knees, and scooped her up before she hit. Braced against the wide expanse of his chest, she felt his hard wall of muscles moving beneath his shirt. How could she defeat someone that picked her up with no effort at all? Too weak to put up a fight, throat too sore for a real scream, futility dragged at her until she slumped in her killer’s arms. If this was the end, she didn’t want to see it coming. She closed her eyes and went limp.

Her eyes flew open when the cool sheets touched her back. He hovered. His big body so close. The subtle musk of his skin filled her nostrils and made her stomach flutter while he fluffed the pillow under her head, straightened her gown about her knees, checked her IV. Then he covered her. Finished, he backed away and his deep blue eyes met hers.
