Why I write about the Egyptian Gods

Why did I choose to write a Romance series about the Egyptian Gods?

About five years ago, I decided I wanted to write a series. I’ve always loved paranormal romances, vampires, werewolves, the fey, shape shifters, novels about other worlds inhabited with different species. Naturally, I gravitated to what I enjoyed reading, but I was tired of the usual books populating the genre. I considered writing about the Greek Gods, but I had recently started reading a popular series about the Greeks and I felt I had no new ideas to offer.

Then I thought of the Egyptian Gods. Ancient Egypt is one of the most well documented cultures. Although the Egyptian Gods have a wealth of history and folklore, there aren’t many fiction books about them. Their story remains untold.

Five Egyptian Gods will comprise the series: Nu, mother of the Pantheon. SET, The God of All Evil. Nephythys, SET’s wife and Goddess of the Dead. Hathor, the Goddess of Love. Lastly, Anubis, son of Nephythys and SET. When theses five gods become involved in the lives of the Nicolis family, nothing will ever be the same.

Eternity is a story of reincarnation and redemption. Roman Nicolis, a mercenary falls in love with the Elyssian, the wrong woman. He seduces her, taking her virginity and cursing them both. For two thousand years, Roman wanders the earth searching for the only woman he can love. Time and again, Roman finds her, only to lose her horribly. Now, in present day New York City, they meet again. And this is his last chance to get things right. If only the gods would let him.

I love HEA aka the big moment at the end of a novel when the hero and heroine get their Happily Ever After. But they only get that moment after I torture them. I have to admit, there is a bit of a sadist in me that enjoys inflicting pain on my characters, though it is for a good cause. The cause of having my reader shed a tear and give a satisfying ‘Ahh’ at the end of the novel. That’s why I writing romance.

Curled on his body in the middle of Central Park, Roman let Stella sleep. Holding her wasn’t a hardship as his mind wandered to the future, their future. Foolhardy, definitely, but what else could he do when he held the object of his obsession in his arms?

Remember your promise and let her go.

He stroked a wayward lock of hair behind her ear and slid his fingers down her silky cheek. She nuzzled him, turned her face into his palm and kissed him. Every noble intention evaporated like a bead of sizzling water in a hot skillet. Cock rock hard, he had to kiss her, feel her breath on his skin, in his body. In the deserted park, he needed her now.

The fine hairs on the back of his neck bristled. He froze. Battle instincts surged to the forefront, screaming for action, instead, he listened to the night surrounding him and waited. Though not a hub of wildlife, the creatures of Central Park were silent. They also waited. Somewhere, nearby, a predator stalked.

Hope you enjoy this sample of Eternity

Nowhere to hide in the studio apartment, she went into the bathroom and tried not to cry, to’ suck it up’ and bury the misery rolling deep in her chest. The façade worked when her Mother died and when her Father remarried, and then died. Foster care, Mrs. Carmen and the attack, Stella had become an expert at hiding her pain, smiling through the tears.

Not this time.

This time the tears came along with wrenching sobs and despair so intense she slid to the floor and curled into a fetal position.

Roman.

ROMAN NICOLIS

Cursed for 2,000 years, he has tracked his lover’s soul through each reincarnation only to lose her horribly every time. Reclaiming their love is their only salvation. He’s been her friend, her father, her neighbor, but never again her lover … until now.

STELLA WALKER

A late night walk home throws her into the path of a killer. The last thing she remembers are the deep blue eyes of the man trying to kill her—and the first things she sees after a seven-day coma are the same blue eyes in the handsome face of the man hired to protect her. Is he truly the owner of a security firm assigned to protect her, or the man who wants to finish her off? Is it fear she feels when Roman touches her, or the memory of something sweeter?

Past secrets haunt them. An angry demon stalks them.

Roman will do anything to recover what they had. Though Stella’s ruined childhood has made her closed her heart and body to any man, he must get past the walls around her to gain her love and trust for it will take their union to defeat an unexpected enemy sent from the Egyptian Gods. A man Romans respects, and Stella trusts.

TWO HEARTS, ONE SOUL, FOR ALL Eternity

EXCERPT:

“What happened in foster care?” Roman’s voice dropped so low she barely heard him.

“N-nothing.” Stella  looked away. Firm fingers clasped her chin and returned her attention to him. He searched her face, looking for a way to force her to tell him.

Would he hurt me?

With night gathering and no one nearby, he could kill her and dump her body in her old hiding place. No one would find her until she stank. She had to get away.

The fingers gripping her chin stroked her jaw and glided down the column of her throat, stalling her instinct to flee, making her long for something she never had. She closed her eyes against that traitorous emotion and tilted her face into the moonlight.

The wind bathed her in a cool breeze, lifting her bangs, revealing her scar. Let him look. Let him see exactly how horrible it is. Maybe then he could deal with the scars on the inside, the ones keeping her from moving forward and claiming whatever joy this life had to offer.

Brave thoughts didn’t give her strength to open her eyes. Pity and disgust wasn’t something she wanted to see on his face.

The calloused pad of his thumb stroked her scar and left an aching trail of awareness spreading across nerve endings that—until recently—slumbered blissfully ignorant of passion. Now they roared to life, demanding attention. Fear sliced through her. What if she looked and all she saw was revulsion?

Then you’d know. Her eyes opened.

Love stared back.

Unshed tears blurred her vision.

Roman’s hand dropped to his side. “Don’t cry. I—I won’t—”

She leaped into his arms. He caught her, tumbling back onto the grass. She landed on top of his body.

Tears pelted his face. Another man would have flinched from her ghastly display and pushed her away or at the least, shielded himself. Roman waited, one hand on the small of her back, the other pushing her tousled hair behind her ears and wiping away the river cascading from her eyes.

“Sweetheart, please, tell me what’s wrong?”

She couldn’t, at least not at this moment. Not when her heart was raw and wide open. With almost no effort, every wall she erected, Roman destroyed. Now the rubble lay at her feet. Instinct told her to rebuild—quickly—before it was too late.

As she looked down into his face, she realized late had passed days ago. Maybe it was the meals he fed her, or how he didn’t balk when she wanted to learn how to defend herself. Maybe it was the nights spent safely sheltered in his arms and the way his gaze caressed her? There was something about him she craved . . . even loved?

Oh God, anything but that!

Interview with Roman Nicolis

Hi this is Tmonique Stephens, I’m here interviewing Roman Nicolis, CEO of Nicolis Security. In light of recent events concerning The Village Strangler he, surprisingly, requested this interview to set the record straight.

Tmonique Stephens: “Mr. Nicolis, you’ve had a very interesting summer.”

Roman Nicolis: (he chuckles) “So I’ve heard. Ask me what you want to know.”

TMS: “Your company is not known for personal protection. Why did you agree to protect Stella Walker, the latest victim of The Village Strangler?”

RN: “She was a unique case. She needed immediate assistance. Without our help she would be dead.”

TMS: “Is it true you’re keeping her at your mansion?”

RN: “I can’t confirm or deny that statement.”

TMS: “How does your fiancée, Bianca feel about your house guest?”

RN: “I’m no longer engaged.”

TMS: “Really, the wedding was three months away. Have you already met the next Mrs. Roman Nicolis?”

RN: “My personal life isn’t up for discussion.”

TMS: “If that’s the case then this interview is over.”

(Roman stands up to leave.)

TMS: Really, it was a joke. (laughs nervously. Roman sits back down, unimpressed) Okay…you have a very interesting family. Can you tell us more about them?

RN: “There is not much to tell. I have 6 brothers. Thane, E.J., Avery, Tyrone, Brayden and Quin. Oh, and Hector, my butler.”

TMS: “Yes, but they’re not really your brothers. Not biologically.”

RN: “Blood couldn’t make us any closer. Many are descendants of my sister Aria. They were orphaned and adopted by me.”

TMS: “Who lets a single man adopt young boys?”

RN: “Are you saying I did something illegal?”

TMS: “Did you?”

RN: (His smile wasn’t warm and welcoming)

TMS: “You look surprisingly youthful for someone who adopted several young boys that are now adult men. What’s your secret?”

RN: “Plenty of water and eight hours of sleep”

TMS: “Is it true there has been a Nicolis in every war since The Revolution?”

RN: (his face shuttered) Possibly.

TMS: “More than possibly. I’ve done some research and dating back to the 1777 there’s documentation of one a Roman Marius Nicolis. And in each subsequent war I’ve found variations of that name until The Vietnam war. You come from a long line of military men.”

RN: “Is that an insult or a compliment, Mrs. Stephens?”

TMS: “Definitely a compliment. I also discovered some pictures of those men. They all have a striking resemblance to you. Any comment.”

RN: Strong genes.

TMS: “Speaking of genes, is there anything you’d like to say about your twin?”

RN: “My twin is dead. There’s nothing more to say. Next question.”

Tmonique shuffles her papers, searching for a question to get the interview back on track.

TMS: “You’re rumored to be very wealthy, but no one knows how you obtained your wealth. Do you want to comment on it?”

RN: “An inheritance from a very distant relative.”

TMS: “What is your biggest regret?”

RN: “This interview.”

TMS: “Come on. Give me one.”

RN: “… I have many regrets. None I care to share with your rapacious readers.”

TMS: “Why did you agree?”

RN: “Lack of good judgment.” (He stood) “Your time is up Mrs. Stephens.”

TMS: “One last question. If there was one thing you could change, what would it be?”

RN: (He pauses. For a brief moment his gaze becomes distant, almost wistful. Then his features became guarded) “I’d change nothing. I would live my life as I have, on my own terms with no regrets. (He leaves)

Sweet Saturday Sample Eternity Excerpt 7/21/12

This is a sample from Eternity. Coming August 15th from Soulmate Publishing.

Damn, he woke her. After only a few hours of sleep, she was sitting up, her head tilted back to catch the whiffs of air generated from the ceiling fan. She pulled the collar of the robe from her damp neck.

He closed his laptop, retrieved a bottle of water from the kitchen and handed it to her. Perched on the edge of her coffee table, he waited while she rubbed the bottle across her sweaty brow and gave a throaty sigh before twisting the cap. Completely unaware of the sensual picture she presented, Stella tossed her head back, tipped the bottle to her lips and gulped until she drained it.

“How long have I been asleep?” She licked the moisture from her lips.

He ignored the lengthening poke of his cock. “A few hours. We need to talk.” Elbows on his knees, he leaned closer to her.

She paused, her eyes shifted around the room. “If not the most dreaded sentence in the world, it must be in the top five.” She took a deep fortifying breath and squared her shoulders. “Go ahead.”

She thinks I’m leaving her. He studied her until she squirmed uncomfortably under the glare. It galled to be lumped together with everyone else that hurt, left, and disappointed her.

“I believe you’re correct about the killings.”

Her eyebrows shot into her hairline. “You do?”

He nearly laughed. “Surprising, huh? Well you made a convincing argument and I’d be foolish to ignore the possibility.”

“So, you’re leaving now,” she stated flatly.

Every muscle rigid, he sat back. “Do you have a death wish? “Cause if there’s someone targeting me, they’re using you to do it.”

Stella nodded solemnly while her fingers twisted in her robe. She chewed the corner of her mouth before she mumbled, “When do you leave?”

His thumb swept across her full bottom lip. When her cheek turned into his palm, his heart caved.

“I’m not leaving, Stella. I will never leave you. I said I would protect you. And I will.” He leaned closer. “With my last breath.”

Her unflinching stare met his. “I want to protect myself. Will you show me how?”

A simple request. “Yes,” he nodded. “I’ll teach you.”

She leaned in. “Thank you.”

Temptation ate at him, but he stood and walked to the other side of the room.

“Go back to sleep, Stella.” He turned off the lights, yanked his shirt over his head and stretched out on the creaking floor.

“Why are you on the floor?” Her voice wavered.

Graced with superior eyesight, he watched her struggling with the robe twisted around her body. “My back wouldn’t appreciate sleeping in that chair and its cooler down here.”

“I can’t see you.” Fear etched her voice.

The mattress squeaked and he heard the soft slap of her feet on the wooden floor.

“I’m right here.” He touched her smooth foot and circled her ankle.

She didn’t pull away, but waited until he removed his hand to climb back onto the futon.  She punched her pillow and settled into a comfortable spot.

“Roman, isn’t the floor hard?”

She sounded like a child asking a question when she already knew the answer.

“I’ve slept on worse and in worse,” he muttered.

“Umm … the bed is big enough for both of us.”

Did she know she offered him exactly what he wanted and where he wanted to be? “You’re asking me to sleep with you?”

“I’m offering to share the futon with you,” she corrected.

Standing next to the futon, he whispered, “Why?”

She jumped, her hand stretched out in front of her, searching for him. “Damn, how can you move that fast? I didn’t hear you.”

“Answer the question. Why?”

“I … can’t let you sleep on the floor.” She scooted over and waited for him.

He should resist. The many reasons why ticked by, but the futon creaked as he lay beside her and stilled. Everything he wanted rested inches away.

“Can you see me?”

“No,” he lied, watching her bite her lip. Slowly, she relaxed, believing the darkness covered her. He sucked in a sharp breath when her hand brushed his bare chest.

“Sorry,” but a smile tweaked her lips.

Stella’s words darted through his brain. “No boyfriends,” she told McCabe. It was too ridiculous to be true. But … could she be a virgin?

“Roman,” she breathed his name and lust raced down his spine, igniting every nerve ending and wiping his brain clean of every thought, but one. He caught the belt of her robe and followed it up to the knot. A finger slipped in and loosened it.

“Yes.” His breath fanned her face. She tilted her chin up at the perfect angle for his lips to cover hers.

“I’ve never had a man in my home before.”

His finger stopped, and withdrew. What the hell am I doing? She drugged him with her words, frailty and covered body. He had to get out of her bed, her apartment, maybe the city, let one of his men protect her.

She touched him again, ran her palm over his stubbled jaw, then traced a finger over his eyebrows and down the bridge of his nose. She played with the shell of his ear until his chest rumbled with suppressed laughter. Then her fingers found his lips and the laughter stopped.

Tuesday Teaser 6/19/2012

Here’s a teaser from Eternity coming soon from Soulmate Publishing.

The Villain has a heart too. Enjoy.

I failed. Stella Walker lived.

Alamut—so named by his god Anubis—balled his hands at his sides. His gut twisted. A simple woman survived his harvesting when all others succumbed. Heart suspended in his chest, he leaned close to the dresser mirror and stared into his blue irises, searching. There, swirling in the depth were writhing tendrils. Anubis hadn’t abandoned him. The god’s power still coursed through him. Dark, intoxicating threads granted him the power to supplant the will of mortals and lead them to their slaughter, all in the name of his master. Like water to a stranded man, only this quenched his thirst. Not the bonds of his false family or the duty and loyalty they demanded. Nothing mattered, but what the god promised. For his servitude, the power to rule would be his.

But Stella Walker still breathed

Six Sentence Sunday 6/3/12

This is a snippet from my WIP the sequel to Eternity which is coming soon from Soulmate Publishing. A little set up: Alexis is at her parents anniversary party and see Reign across the room after she has asked him to stay away from the celebration. Hope you enjoy it.

Reign stalked her, moving smoothly between the tables and the dance floor until he stopped inches from her. The tuxedo didn’t hide the perfection of his body. Clean shaven, his chiseled face held no softness except for his newly cropped, wavy hair curling around his ears and nap, tempting her. Different clothes, different hair, same eyes. They were still deep, ocean blue. Those orbs drained her will and left her remembering their only night together.

Sweet Saturday Sample May 5, 2012. Cinco De Mayo

Four days had grinded by since Stella saw Roman and everyday was a little worse than the last. Memories of her past lives tormented her. Stella as a brown-haired girl in a Victorian gown, then a stooped old woman with hair the color of steel or a curly-headed flapper in a beaded dress downing watered whiskey in a Chicago nightclub, in the middle of the night these images came to her. Different women, different periods, all with one constant  …  Roman. In the background, beside her, lifting her up, standing behind her, holding her hand, Roman was there. Always.

Hungry for his presence, she second-guessed every decision she’d made and regretted some of the harsh, hasty words she said. Regretted the day she met him, but prayed for his safety every night.

Was he still in jail? He couldn’t be. Wealthy men didn’t stay in jail and if he wasn’t in jail, why hadn’t he come for her? That was an easy question to answer. With Daniel dead, she no longer needed a bodyguard. With a fiancée on his arm, he no longer needed her.

She should be glad it was over. And she was. Her life would return to normal. Yeah, normal. Pre-Roman normal. She refused to question whether that was a life at all.

“Stella! Stop dragging your ass and pick up.”   Joe slapped a plate down in the window and rang the bell. Whether he took pity on her or he wanted to cash in on her infamy, Joe rehired her when she walked into the diner and asked for her old job back. Before the attack, her daily schedule didn’t cause her to fall asleep dead to the world.  Now, after two days of work, she wanted nothing more than to sleep and never wake up. If she could do that, maybe her misery would be over.
