NaNoWriMo-Oh No!
It’s November, autumn leaves are falling, and that means it’s. NaNoWriMo. Every writer knows what that means: 50k in 30 days.
That means, no TV, no movies, no friends, no weekends, no nights out, and limited social media. Plan quick, easy to prepare meals, activities to keep the kids and spouses—if not happy—certainly occupied. We are supposed to take these drastic measures in the hope that 1,333 words will magically pour out of our heads, race down our arm to nimble fingers poised over keyboards and laptops.
Well this writer isn’t doing it. Not this year, not next year, not ever.
My muse is a finicky bitch. She works when she wants too, where she wants too, and is easily distracted. I’m one of those writers that edits while they write. I’ve heard that’s a no-no.
‘You should write the entire manuscript and then edit’.
That sounds good and makes sense, but doesn’t works for me. Usually, I write one-third the novel then go back over the plot, the characters, and setting. I ask myself questions: Does my plot make sense? Are my characters interesting and believable? Is there enough action? Where do I go from here? And most important, do I still love this idea and can I finish this novel? If I’m dumping words on a page just for the sake of completing a word count goal, I can’t do that. It doesn’t feel right, especially at the end of thirty days when I have to edit everything and I have no idea why I’ve written something or where the story is going. I don’t want to be in that position.
For me, NaNoWriMo is an everyday occurrence. I average between five hundred and one thousand words per day. My novels average 100k, so I complete a manuscript approximately in four months. Right now, with all the other events occurring in my life, my slower, steadier pace is just right. Those writers who can write a great novel in thirty days awe me. They have my deepest respect. My pen salutes you.

It’s hard to say what exactly would be my Go-To Autumn Romance book. When I think real hard about it, I would have to say it has a sexy, strong, determined male that when it comes to love is just lost. Then there has to be a woman who is usually in need of help or needs to know what love and family is. Together they heal each other and love turns out to be their greatest gift. I also love a happy ending at this time of year, usually where the epilogue has them starting their own family to love and cherish. Oh….and definitely HOT loving too!

I’m with you, Tmonique. I can’t just let the pen fly, or the keys soar. I have to edit as I go, adjust the outline as the story takes turns I hadn’t expected. I did do NANOWRIMO last year and wrote 30,000 words instead of 50,000 because I’m slower and more calculating. And I needed the focus the event gave me to get intense with my time management.

I write chapter by chapter. Not sure how common that is. Then, the next day, I reread the last chapter written to remind myself of what’s going on and pick up where I left off so the continuity doesn’t suffer. I also edit as I go back by one chapter. terrimuhich(at)yahoo(dot)com.

I love autumn with all the brilliant colors: oranges, yellows and reds of leaves. I love crisp, cool mornings where the sky is so blue it looks endless and the air is so fresh in your lungs. I love snuggling up in a warm throw on a cold autumn day with a good book. Of course, I love snuggling up with a good book about anytime of the year. I love Thanksgiving because it is a time to remember all the many blessings in my life and express thanks. I love baking spicy pumpkin pies with dollops of cream.
I like stories of the unexpected. I also love the steamy passion but I hate mentioning favorite authors because the list is long. I appreciate the many styles authors use to weave stories of mystery, love, intrigue, preternatural and inspiration. I love reading because I can go anywhere, any time in my mind and imagine indescribable things.

I don’t know how those authors do it. If I was an author, I would most likely be like you and edit while I wrote. They are mighty brave to take on that challenge.
